Malta

When my grandfather served in the First World War, he wrote about his experiences in Europe which included not only his time in France, but several months serving in Gallipoli. En route to Turkey, he spent time training in Egypt, and when he was injured in Gallipoli, he was evacuated to Malta.

After having read about his travels, I’ve incorporated some of those places into my own travels. I’ve sailed passed Gallipoli, visited Egypt twice and visited the battlefields in France. Besides Edinburgh, Malta was the only place left on the list.

I was looking for something not too far away for the winter and found that Explore Worldwide had a tour focused on Malta without including Sicily (which I’ve visited before). I’d never travelled with Explore before but a friend recommended them, so this tour was a great way to see what Explore was like.

I wasn’t disappointed. The tour ran like a well oiled machine and the days were packed with visits to walled cities, ancient churches and megalithic temples as well as some scenic walks and plenty of free time. I have no doubt that I’ll be using Explore again.

I wrote this tale as I travelled so that I could include as much detail as possible. You can start with my Pre-days or the Table of Contents.

All my photos are on my flickr page.

Enjoy!

  1. You are amazing! Your photography is stunning and you give just enough detail without becoming burdensome. I always enjoy your photos whether you are home or traveling. I was on an Intrepid tour with you in the Galapagos Islands. Thank you.

  2. Wars are never rewarding but what I have read about Gallipoli Campaign was the harshest of the Front in WWI. The pictures are excellent and peaceful.
