Storm Chasing – Tour 7 Day Seven

24 June 2022

Salina, KS to Burlington, CO

523 km

The working TV meant I could finally watch Airplane!

The show has a cult following among some chasers and many of the one liners are integrated into the lingo.

Never call anyone Shirley.

We had our briefing at ten and our last day looked promising for at least some storms in the northeastern Colorado and Nebraska area which is within our driving distance to return to Denver the next day.

Bill turned over the van to Matt for the day and joined us in Hays for lunch at Gella’s Diner. They had a familiar item on the menu.

We call this Newfie Steak at home. First time I’d seen it outside Newfoundland.

There was another familiar item on the menu as well.

We headed east where some basic thunderstorms were expected to form. We weren’t expecting supercells but I was hoping for a bit of lightning and a sunset.

We drove to Goodland and with a storm in the background, we stopped at the world’s largest easel and got our group photos taken. The photography tour had a sky that cooperated.

We got ours taken and since Bill was missing, the photo was adjusted.

From here, we went a bit north to watch the same storm for a few minutes.

We got rained out and headed to Burlington for the night, but a storm just southwest of the city was moving up to meet us near the Kansas/Colorado border.

We got beautiful foreground with great structure.

Lightning.

And a bit of the sunset.

A great way to end four weeks of chasing

It was topped off with an uneventful return to Denver.

On to 2023.
