Storm Chasing 2023 – Tour 6 Day 5

9 June 2023

Clayton, NM to Guymon, OK

I woke hoping for a tea, but here was no kettle or microwave in the room and only coffee in the lobby, so I had to wait for breakfast. I feasted on bananas and sat outside to chat for a bit before the briefing at nine.

The slight risk from the day before had disappeared but Bill expected it to return later in the day. It would return and we were hoping to find something in the Oklahoma Panhandle.

For breakfast, we went to the Front Porch restaurant in the town of Texline which was just over the border in Texas.

We sat down and they handed us lunch menus. Someone asked if they served breakfast and she said they stop at 10:30. He held up his cell phone which said 9:40.

But it hadn’t switched to Central Time.

Oops.

So, we had brunch. I had the cheeseburger, fries, hot tea and chocolate pie. Every scrap of it was delicious. Even the tea, served hot in a decently large mug, really hit the spot. Five stars on Google.

As the slight risk returned, Bill noted that we didn’t have far to go and could drift north while we waited for the storms to initiate. We drove into the Oklahoma panhandle and stopped in Wheeless, a ghost town I’d visited in 2018.

Back then, I was sure one home was occupied and the church was open. Today, no signs of life and the church was shuttered.

I wandered about to take a few pics.

From here, we headed towards Boise City where the most recognizable court house on the plains is in the middle of roundable.

I’ve been through Boise City so many times, I always said I’d get a video of the courthouse. Still trying to convince the drivers to do a couple laps.

From there, we went north into Colorado to watch one system in a line of storms. We stopped by an abandoned house.

With a tilted garage.

And inside a metal quanset hut were two cats, several dead mice and a lot of junk piled up.

We moved on and pulled over on a road to watch the approaching storm, next to another abandoned house.

It had a garage that had a snake hiding in the debris. I saw it but couldn’t get close enough for a pic.

The storm produced a couple of bolts but didn’t look like it would amount to much, so Bill decided to go south of Boise City where more storms were initiating.

We got south of Stratford when those storms started to fizzle, so we went back towards Boise City as the rest of the storms started to die. We pulled into one laneway to watch the little bit of lightning it had.

It started to rain a little so we booted it east towards Guymon and stopped for the sunset.

Bill showed me this view below and I trotted over to the transmission lines before the colours faded.

From here, we stopped at Braum’s in Guymon to eat and then checked in to the Best Western.

Nice spot
