For many people, one of the joys of travelling is tasting the food in other countries. Unfortunately, I’m not a very adventurous person when it comes to trying certain foods.
For example, I don’t like fish.
Yes. I’m a Newfoundlander and I don’t like fish. If it swims, crawls or frolics in the water, I don’t eat it. As well, I don’t like lamb, goose, pheasant or any wild game.
And I don’t like duck.
So, on my second day in Beijing in October, 2010, I went up to my tour director, Jin, and asked him if he had gotten my list of dietary restrictions. He said he had.
“So,” I said. “We’re not eating duck on this tour?”
“No,” he replied in a calm, matter-of-fact tone. “None of that on this tour.”
“No?” I asked. “Cause the itinerary says we’re having Peking duck for dinner.”
“Ohhhhhh,” Jin said then smiled. “Duck? I thought you said dog.”
Of course, what got me was that he wasn’t the least bit upset when he thought I was asking if we were going to be eating dog on this tour.
🙂
Oh my gosh, that is so funny!! I agree, if it lives in the water that’s where it belongs, not on my table. Same goes for goose, duck, lambs and anything wild walking around the woods……..and dogs should remain “man’s best friend”!!
