Monahans, TX to Roswell, NM
569 km
The room at the Motel 6 was quite nice and I loved the bed, but for some reason, only managed about four hours of sleep. I met up with my walking pals and we did four kilometres around the town. Back at the hotel, I met a woman with this on her head.
Apparently, it’s a marmoset and it’s fairly common to adopt one as a pet.
Nope. I’m guessing it wouldn’t like living in a place where the air hurts your face.
We met up at 9:30 for our briefing. There wasn’t any really high probabilities of tornadoes but there was a chance of some storms.
We went to breakfast where I had to have the biscuits and gravy again and we headed towards New Mexico by 11:30, gaining an hour with the time change.
When we got to Roswell, we stopped for the obligatory photo of the welcome sign.
It was Roswell, after all.
We dropped our luggage into the Comfort Suites since the storms looked to be going up in the area. We had time for another obligatory Roswell pic.
We picked up lunch at Jimmy John’s. The reading material on the bathroom floor was quite interesting.
We headed west into the hills and made a stop for ice cream courtesy of Tania.
That made Jeff happy.
Just past the town of Lincoln we drove into an open plain with two storms in view – one on the right and one on the left.
The storm on the right had a nice wall cloud that looked like it wanted to drop something but then it disappeared around the hills.
The storm on the left looked like it spurned a dustnado or possibly a landspout that didn’t develop.
We stayed in the area for about an hour.
As the rain approached, we turned around to head towards Roswell, hoping to pick up the storm on the plains west of the town.
A few minutes later, I was convinced I got a shot of a UFO.
I still have no idea what it was.
Just after dark, we pulled into a field to watch the lightning but it was all cloud to cloud.
We made another attempt east of Roswell but it started to pour after we stopped, so we headed back to the hotel, making a quick stop to see the McDonald’s done up like a UFO.
The other van got out into the rain for pics. I took the pic as we drove by the next morning and stayed dry.
After only four hours of sleep last night, I just dropped my stuff and went to bed. And unlike the last time I was in Roswell, there was no lightning to light up my room….and scare the crap out of me when I rolled over to see the pillows present a vaguely human silhouette next to my bed.
This time, I put the pillows on the couch. Just in case.
