Altus, OK to Monahans, TX
435 km
I managed to get a full six hours and was up and went for a walk to Walmart and around the neighbourhood with two others from the tour. We found it interesting that the driveways had the house numbers painted on the curb along with their sports teams for many.
Imagine being a Patriots fan looking at a house for sale and seeing Jets and Dolphins fans on either side.
We met up at ten for a quick briefing that showed storms in east Texas as far as the New Mexican border. We stayed in Altus for breakfast at the Sunrise Café. I had the Pile Up which was a biscuit, sausage pattie, over easy egg and hashbrowns all smothered in gravy.
It was freaking delicious
We finished up at eleven and headed southwest into Texas. We made good time through Lubbock and approached a cell southwest of the city. We pulled into a road that had this sign on the fence.
After about ten minutes there, we could smell the gas. Time to go!
We moved to another spot keeping ahead of the storm and we came across a snake.
Yup. That’s why I live in a place where the air hurts my face.
I started to experiment the Live Composite mode on my Olympus and could catch multiple bolts. When it’s facing the right direction.
The storm started to kick up a great deal of dust and we kept ahead of it, making a couple more stops along the way. There was lightning coming from different points in the storm, and at our last stop, I pointed the camera is the opposite direction that everyone else was facing. Just as I was going to turn if off to leave, this guy boomed in front of me.
The storms got messy so we carried on to Monahans for the night in the Motel 6 after a sit down meal at a Mexican restaurant.
