Storm Chasing – Tour 7 Day Three

20 June 2022

Lemmon, SD to Ainsworth, NE

690 km

The thunderstorms that followed us to Lemmon put on a show for about an hour while I fell asleep and I managed a decent seven hours.

I went for a walk to visit my favourite little park.

We met up at ten and were looking at South Dakota for intercepts which meant we didn’t have to go far, so everyone got to visit my favourite little park.

And then had lunch at the Alaska Café.

I ordered a root beer float but they were out of ice cream.

When we were done, we headed east as the tornado risk had gone up to 5% along an area that Bill had noted earlier. We went south to the I-90 and could see the storm forming to the west.

And moving directly towards us.

We went a short distance west towards Kadoka and stopped to watch the storm move towards us.

It was a fast mover, doing about fifty knots.

We headed east, easily keeping ahead of it on the interstate and made several stops.

By the time we got to Reliance, it was heading off to the north east and the highway went southeast, so we turned south with our eye on a storm to our south that wasn’t near the line of storms to the north.

We entered Nebraska and made a couple stops to watch the storm.

We caught up with it around sunset and had a few minutes to catch the lightning.

And then it just fell apart.

We loaded up and stopped at a convenience store for something to eat. Our hotel for the night was the Rodeway Inn in Ainsworth.

Nice spot.
