10 June 2023
Guymon, OK to Clayton, NM (Part II)
I was down for 9:30 and learned that one client had slipped in the tub and had to go to the hospital for x-rays.
The rest of us gathered for our briefing and Bill decided not to pursue the storms that were looking to hover right around Dallas. Being a weekend, the area would be crawling with chasers including professional chasers, tourist chasers and mom and pop with the kids chasers.
After the briefing, we got a good hour to wander around Walmart and someone picked up a Gizmo for the van.
We picked up the woman at the hospital and then another client went to urgent care to see if he could get something for persistent motion sickness that was new to him.
We went to lunch at Vallarta Mexican restaurant, a place I’d been before and recognized it by the chairs.
We headed out after making the pickup at urgent care and headed west. By two in the afternoon, there were signs of storms going up to the west and we headed in that direction. One of two storms initiating just inside New Mexico.
We drove to Clayton to watch the first of the two cells for a few minutes.
From here, we headed back into Texas towards Dalhart, making several stops as the first cell surged and diminished repeatedly with tops between 40k and 50k+.
We turned south, following the second of the two storms. It was developing a nice looking shape.
We pulled off the road and watched the beautiful cell morph into a Mothership Supercell.
By far, the best structure I’d ever seen on the plains.
When we were done, we headed to Dalhart for a pit stop and then went back into New Mexico. We drove almost an hour to get there and we gained an hour.
And we went back to the Holiday Motel.
