Storm Chasing 2023 – Tour 6 Day 2

6 June 2023

Antonito, CO to Santa Rosa, NM

I was up early enough to go for a walk before we met up at 9:30 for our briefing. The high pressure system was still parked in the centre of the continent and that created conditions that made it hard for supercells to form. However, there were indications of some thunderstorms in eastern New Mexico. We expected conditions to improve by the weekend.

We went to breakfast at the Dutch Mill Café across the street and I had to try their apple pie.

From here, we headed south towards Santa Fe, crossing the border a few minutes after we left Antonito.

We continued south and were delayed at least a half hour at a 2 mile stretch of construction on the highway. We looked for a pit stop in Tres Piedras but the only thing around was a cell tower that looked like a tree.

And the ranger station.

We waited fifteen minutes for it to open, so Bill showed us the old style weather station.

And we said hello to the local lizard.

The scenery got quite nice outside Santa Fe.

We stopped at McDonald’s for lunch and then carried on towards the interstate as cells began to initiate by the mid afternoon.

We made a couple stops to watch some nice structure.

The time-lapse shows the airplanes avoiding the system.

We got a couple of longer stops to watch the structure and lightning.

The second stop had a nice roll cloud go over, but there was too much rain for a time-lapse.

I settled for trying to catch the lightning which seemed to be all around us.

We made a couple more stops but got rained out and stopped just outside Santa Rosa for snacks before getting to the Econolodge for the night.

Apparently, it has the best waffles in the world according to one review.

We shall see.
