Blog Hop: Writing Process—#thisishowwedo

Historical Romance author Kate Robbins tagged me in a blog hop to discuss my writing process.

1. What am I working on?

Right now I’m fiddling around with my next novel. It is tentatively entitled A Soldier’s Heart and is a fictionalized account of my six months in Bosnia where I served as a peacekeeper from October 1993 to April 1994. The story follows the events that mark my descent from that of a normally functioning individual to the depths of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The title is actually a play on words as PTSD has been known by many names in the past and during the Civil War, it was called Soldier’s Heart. Meet Newfoundland’s newest romance novelist: Victoria Barbour

I am pleased today to have the opportunity to host debut novelist Victoria Barbour as she continues her blog tour celebrating ahrthe release of her new romance novel Against her Rules. Available on e-readers everywhere, this witty Newfoundland based romance novel was a pleasant departure from my usual reading fare. Elsie Walsh is a B&B owner in Heart’s Ease who has one rule: no sleeping with the guests. That is, until Campbell Scott shows up. The result is a fun summer read with a wonderful cast of characters.

When I was given the opportunity to interview Victoria for her blog tour, I knew exactly who I wanted to focus on.

Aunt Ida! A colourful, strong-willed 96-year-old supporting character who is guaranteed to make you smile every time she shows up. Continue reading “Meet Newfoundland’s newest romance novelist: Victoria Barbour”

The Book Club Experience

If you’re part of a book club, I imagine it must be pretty thrilling to have the author show up to answer some questions.Braco

As an author, I can tell you, it’s exhilarating to be invited to a book club to answer questions. Unlike readings or book fairs where I’m trying to sell the book to people who often know little or nothing about it, the book club is completely different. I don’t have to sell anything. They’re already sold.

Recently, I had my second opportunity to meet with a book club. Two members of my writing group, Kate Robbins and Melanie Martin, belong to this club and Melanie picked the book. They got together at 7 pm for a discussion and I showed up at 8:30 to an enthusiastic crowd of six from varied backgrounds including a nurse, a former reporter, a sister of two soldiers/peacekeepers and a historian. Quick Press

I’ve been a bit quiet since getting home from the surgery two weeks ago, and while recovering physically has been going very smoothly, my head has been a bit sluggish. Nothing horrendous but enough to make it hard to write a lot. Someone suggested that it could be a side-effect of the anesthesia, and sure enough, I googled it and this kind of sluggishness is not unusual, especially the older we are when we have surgery. And I’m no spring chicken. The good news is that it should fade over the next few weeks.

So, I’m taking this opportunity to experiment a little with Word Press and I’m trying out the Quick Press function.

In the meantime, here’s a picture of my cat, Shadow.

Shadow

She’s letting me know what she thinks of the new hairball treats.

Happy Vitamin C Day!
