Do you want to glide through the water next to a sea turtle that was born before the Great War or watch sharks weave between your feet? Spin in the water with sea lions or watch a sea horse sway in the currents? Or watch rays fly through the depths like birds riding the thermals?
The Galapagos are this and more. A string of islands only two hours from Ecuador made famous by the work of Charles Darwin. Islands that work hard to find a balance between tourism and conservation.
The Galapagos are probably best seen on a small ship cruise, an expensive option for a solo, but I was able to find a land based tour called the Best of Galapagos with Intrepid Travel.
The tour travels between the islands by speedboat and stays in hotels on three of the four islands visited.
This was an active tour with snorkeling opportunities almost every day, a hike, kayaking and visits to cultural and conservation centres. We saw tortoises, sea turtles, manta rays, sea lions, sea horses, iguana, pelicans, sharks, and of course, the blue footed boobies.
This tale was written as I travelled and is fairly detailed. You can start on the Travel Days or navigate to individual days via the Table of Contents.
All my photos can be found on my flickr page.
Enjoy.

So happy to see this. I’m going to share it with my brother, David Derbyshire. Hope that’s ok. Can’t wait to read, and relive every day. Thanks!
Absolutely. Share away. 🙂
I have lost my travel forum site on my computer. Could you please help me get back on the site. Purvis
