“Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuump!”
Altus, OK to Salina, KS (681 km)
I was up at 6:30, had a huge bowl of oatmeal and worked on my photos. We met up at ten and what we thought would be a down day turned out to be a chase day with some possibilities in Kansas. After the briefing, we headed north east to Oklahoma City.
Passing through the toll booths, I noticed a storm shelter next to it for the booth operators.
We stopped for lunch at Steve’s Ribs where I had the juiciest and most tender turkey I’ve ever had. Two thick slices in a bun.
We continued north, watching storms blow up across northeastern Kansas and Missouri. A state of emergency was declared in St. Louis, primarily due to flooding.
We could see the results of the heavy rains in Kansas over the last week with fields, ditches and off-ramps underwater.
We drove a half hour east of Salina and stopped to watch the radar for a while.
But nothing was developing to the south, so we took a bumpy but scenic back road to Salina as the sun set.
We got rooms at the AmericInn.
I picked up a sub at Subway next door and was out by eleven.
