“Dalhart? Again?”
Tucumcari, NM to Dalhart, TX (741 km)
I slept till 7:15!
I had a light breakfast and we got together for our briefing at ten. There were storms coming off the high elevation up and down New Mexico and Colorado and Bill decided to wait around Tucumcari to see what they would do.
So, we went to the Kix on 66 diner for a typical American breakfast.
I went all out.
I loved the kid’s menu.
And then we went looking for a museum, but being Monday, they were all closed. So, we hung around the railway station for a bit and then decided to go north. We drove through Clayton and then went up through Boise City. We were almost to Colorado when the conditions started to favour a storm to our south.
So, we turned around and booted it south to Texas and back into New Mexico. We could see the storm to the west and drove under the anvil, coming across some high winds. We pulled off once we got out of the rain to take a look.
The system had a lot of scud, or wispy clouds that hang down from the system and they can be mistaken for funnel clouds.
We made another stop but got rained out, so we drove east towards Texas on the interstate. We pulled off near Vega and watched a haboob to our west.
And nice structure to our north.
There was some lightning, but not enough to stick around for. Once the dust hit us, we dove back into the vans and headed north to Dalhart where we had rooms at the same unfussy Rodeway Inn we had been in a few days before.
Déjà vu.
