Oregon

In 1991, I was 26 years old and on a road trip up the west coast of the United States with my boyfriend. In Oregon, we came across a site where we could take an elevator down into a huge cave on the edge of the water that was filled with sea lions. In the shop, my boyfriend hauled out a $10 and bought the tickets.

We got into the elevator with another gentleman when my boyfriend held up two $1 bills and said he thought the tickets were $5, not $4. The other gentleman said he had paid $5 for his ticket. We couldn’t understand why we got back $2 from the $10 bill.

My boyfriend just shrugged and pocketed the money. We got out of the elevator and checked out the cave. There were dozens of sea lions lazing around on the rocks while the Pacific crashed in through the cave entrance. An impressive sight.

After a few pictures, we got back into the elevator and went back up to the shop. On the way out, I hesitated near the ticket counter and checked out the prices.

Adults: $ 5.00

Children:  $3.00

Yup. It’s a curse.

And a profitable one, too.

😀
